CIMA Case Study Exams (OCS, MCS, SCS) Explained: How to Score 70%+ in 2026
If OT exams test what you KNOW, Case Study exams test how you THINK.
And that’s why global pass rates are brutal: OCS 52%, MCS 47%, SCS 38%.
At Accountants for Tomorrow, Case Study is our superpower. We were founded when CIMA introduced online Case Studies in 2015. Our founder built a system specifically for students who found case studies challenging — and it still works in 2026.
Here’s everything CIMA doesn’t tell you in the syllabus.

What is a CIMA Case Study Exam? (Not What You Think)
You get:
– **Pre-seen:** 30-40 page document about a fictional company released 6 weeks before exam
– **Exam:** 3 hours (OCS/MCS) or 4 hours (SCS), 4 sections, 60% is unseen info that drops on exam day
You play a role:
– **OCS:** Finance Officer — operational, short-term, fix problems
– **MCS:** Finance Manager — tactical, medium-term, manage performance
– **SCS:** Senior Finance Manager / FD — strategic, long-term, manage risk and growth
**Marking secret:** CIMA uses 4 competencies — Technical, Application, Business Awareness, Leadership. Theory alone = max 25%. Application = 60% of marks.
That’s why students who memorise Kaplan fail.
OCS vs MCS vs SCS: Key Differences
| Feature | OCS (Operational) | MCS (Management) | SCS (Strategic) |
|—|—|—|—|
| **Role** | Finance Officer | Finance Manager | Senior Finance Manager |
| **Focus** | Fix operational issues, cash, costing | Budget vs actual, performance, projects | Strategy, risk, M&A, funding |
| **Pre-seen** | Simple company, 1 country | Complex, maybe 2 regions | Group, multi-country, listed |
| **Time Pressure** | 45 min per section | 45 min per section | 60 min per section |
| **Biggest Fail Reason** | Writing theory, not application | Ignoring pre-seen, generic answers | No strategic thinking, no risk |
| **Pass Rate** | 52% | 47% | 38% |
The 6-Week Pre-Seen System That Gets 70%+
Most students: Read pre-seen twice, highlight, hope.
AFT students: Follow this.
**Week 6 (Release Week): Deconstruct**
– Create 1-page company fact sheet: Industry, revenue, competitors, key staff, products, locations
– Read pre-seen 3 times — 1st for story, 2nd for numbers, 3rd for risks
– Output: 2-page summary in YOUR words
**Week 5: Strategic Analysis**
– PESTEL for the company
– SWOT (with evidence from pre-seen)
– Porter’s 5 Forces
– Stakeholder map
– For SCS: Add Ansoff, BCG, Risk Register
**Week 4: Link to Syllabus**
– Take each E1, E2, E3, P1, P2, P3, F1, F2, F3 topic
– Ask: “How could this topic appear with this company?”
– Example: If pre-seen company is a retailer with cash issues → F1 working capital, P1 budgeting, E1 sustainability of suppliers
We give our students a matrix of 80+ possible exam triggers linked to pre-seen.
**Week 3-2: Mock Exams + Feedback Loop**
– 5 full mocks under exam conditions
– After each mock, we do 1-on-1 video feedback — not just marks, but WHY you lost marks
– Common feedback: “You identified issue but didn’t apply pre-seen data. Use the revenue figure from page 12.”
**Week 1: Exam Technique Polishing**
– No new content. Only timing and structure.

The 4-Box Method: How to Structure Every Answer for 70%+
This is our signature method. Use it for EVERY paragraph.
**Box 1: Identify (10% of marks)**
State the issue from the question + pre-seen.
Bad: “Cash flow is important”
Good: “As per pre-seen, Flavours Co’s receivables days increased from 32 to 48 days (pg 18), indicating cash collection issues ahead of festive season peak.”
**Box 2: Apply Theory (20% of marks)**
Bring E1/P1/F1 etc.
“According to P1, tight credit control and factoring could reduce working capital cycle…”
**Box 3: Analyse Impact (35% of marks) — WHERE MOST MARKS ARE**
What does this mean for THIS company?
“If receivables remain at 48 days, Flavours Co will need R2.3m overdraft, increasing finance costs by 15% and risking covenant breach with bank (pre-seen pg 22)…”
**Box 4: Recommend (35% of marks)**
Specific, justified, balanced.
“I recommend 2% early settlement discount for customers paying within 14 days, plus weekly credit meetings. This costs R120k but saves R400k interest and improves supplier relations. However, must monitor customer attrition risk.”
Examiners love balanced recommendations with pros/cons.
Time Management: 3 Hours Feels Like 10 Minutes
– **OCS/MCS:** 4 sections x 45 mins = 180 mins. Each section has 2-3 sub-tasks.
– **SCS:** 4 sections x 60 mins = 240 mins.
**Golden Rule:** Never spend >50% of section time on first sub-task.
Our timer technique:
– Set alarm at 20 mins per section — if still on task 1, move to task 2, come back later
– Always leave 5 mins per section to review — CIMA awards marks for structure and professionalism
Top 5 Mistakes That Cause Failure (From Real Scripts)
1. **Generic Answers:** Writing “Use KPIs” without saying WHICH KPI for THIS company. Fail.
2. **Ignoring Unseen Info:** 60% of marks come from new info on exam day. If you only regurgitate pre-seen, you fail.
3. **No Pre-seen Reference:** Zero reference to pre-seen page numbers or data = examiner thinks you didn’t read it.
4. **Theory Dump:** 3 paragraphs of textbook definition with no application. Max 2 marks.
5. **No Ethics / Sustainability:** CIMA always tests ethics. Always include ethical angle, even if not asked directly.
What Examiners Want in 2026 (From Examiner Reports)
We read every examiner report. 2025/26 themes:
– **Digital:** How would AI / automation impact this process?
– **Sustainability:** Carbon costs, ESG reporting, sustainable sourcing
– **People:** How to manage remote teams, upskill finance team
– **Risk:** Not just financial risk — operational, reputational, cyber
Include at least one of these in each section for bonus marks.
